Burkevale Protestant Separate School

Burkevale Protestant Separate School is Ontario’s last remaining Protestant separate school and is the only school in the Penetanguishene Protestant Separate School Board. It is located in Penetanguishene on the corner of Peel and Burke Streets. The original two story, red brick building was built in the year 1882 for a cost of $3500. A two story addition was added in 1909-1910. The building was torn down in June 1965 to make way for the current Burkevale Protestant Separate School.

The current school has a population of 348 students in classes from kindergarten to grade 8 and a staff of 44 (2022). The school’s mascot is a bulldog and its motto is “Striving for Excellence”. The school is well-known for its state of the art education, technology, full music program, and great athletic teams. The current principal is Mrs. Julia McLaren.

New Year Hat!

January 2026 Newsletter

Happy New Year! As 2025 comes to a close, we hope the past year provided many moments to pause, reconnect, and enjoy meaningful time with family and friends. Amid the busyness of life, it is easy to push meaningful moments aside, trusting that there will always be more time ahead. This past year has reminded us, in very real ways, how precious and fragile that time truly is.
As we welcome 2026, we encourage everyone in our school community to move forward with intention—placing wellness, gratitude, and connection at the forefront. May this new year be guided by presence, balance, and care for both ourselves and one another, with a renewed appreciation for the moments that matter most.

December 2025 Newsletter

Mark your calendars as booked for December 16th (snow date of the 17th) for the Burkevale Christmas concert! Despite our library still being on the stage, a student population that is beyond the capacity of our gymnasium (let alone when parents and/or grandparents join in the festivities), we are forging ahead, once again with our Christmas concert. A special thanks to Mr. Kent and Ms. Keefer for giving up their space for the week! Creative minds hashed out a schedule so that all loved ones would have the opportunity to come and watch the students celebrate the joys of Christmas. Our evening will be divided into four separate time frames, with the kindergarten students going first, followed by grades one to threes, fours and fives, and finally the grades six to eight group.

November 2025 Newsletter

“The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month attained a special significance in the post-war years. The moment when hostilities ceased on the Western Front became universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in the war. This first modern world conflict had brought about the mobilization of over 70 million people and left between nine million and 13 million dead, perhaps as many as one-third of them with no known grave. The allied nations chose this day and time for the commemoration of their dead soldiers.” Burkevale will honour our veterans on Remembrance Day at the school with thoughtful activities and a moment of silence following our recess. https://nationaltoday.com/remembrance-day/

An important goal of the school is to help students develop self-discipline and social skills so that they can become productive, mature and responsible members of society.
